Sekondi-Takoradi — the twin cities everyone simply calls “Takoradi” — sits on the Atlantic coast of Ghana’s Western Region. It is a working port city with a busy market, colonial-era history and some of the country’s finest beaches within easy reach.
Here are our favourite things to see and do, from the team at Kingstel Hotel on Du-Paul Road.
In the City
Market Circle
The heart of Takoradi’s commerce and one of the most colourful markets in Ghana. Its round layout is packed with stalls selling textiles, beads, fresh produce and street food — perfect for picking up fabric or gifts.
Takoradi Harbour
Opened in 1928, Takoradi Harbour was Ghana’s first deep-water seaport and is still one of the busiest in West Africa. It shaped the city’s growth as a centre of trade.
Fort Orange, Sekondi
Built by the Dutch in 1642, Fort Orange in Sekondi now serves as a lighthouse and offers sweeping views over the harbour and coastline. Check access before you visit.
Ghana’s Oil City
Since the discovery of the offshore Jubilee oil field, Takoradi has become the centre of Ghana’s oil and gas industry — which is why so many business travellers pass through. See our business stays.
Day Trips Along the Coast
Busua Beach
About an hour west of Takoradi, Busua is one of Ghana’s best surf spots, with a long sandy beach for swimming, sunbathing and fishing.
Cape Three Points
The southernmost tip of Ghana, between Dixcove and Princess Town. Its lighthouse, completed in 1925, stands above a rugged stretch of coast.
Nzulezo Stilt Village
A village built entirely on stilts over a lake, about two and a half hours from Takoradi — a full day out and an unforgettable sight.
